I came across this post on the Strobist website a few months ago and I've been wanting to try it ever since. It needs a minimum of equipment and is very straightforward. I used my Nikon D300, a SB800 speedlight and my Tamron 90mm macro. The lens has a very shallow depth of field, so I took these shots between f/22 and f/32 to get more of the shot in focus. The appeal of this shot was obvious: the wonderful shapes of the wind-streaked clouds above Littlehaven beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Although I also loved the way the wet sand caught the light and the shapes of the boats about to be launched, I liked the clouds so much that I opted to give them a little more of the frame than the rule of thirds would allow. To me, this composition gives some sense of the space on Littlehaven beach. I knew when I took the shot that I would want to convert it to black and white. I created this shot of the sunset from the coastal path near Trefin, Pembrokeshire, by combining five exposures in Photomatix. I had taken some shots earlier in the session using ND grads but it wasn't possible to use them with this composition without darkening the top of the building too much. It was extremely windy and the grass was blowing all over the place but Photomatix still managed to blend the images without any ghosting.
